  1. Two multi million contracts have been issued by the Parks Department this month. A contract to rebuild the Green houses in Forest Park has commenced.
A second contract with Trocom Construction in Maspeth for the Ridgewood Reservoir in Highland Park is pending at the Comptroller's office.

  2. New store going up on Austin next to new Metro PCS/former Buster Brown. Peeked in quickly; inventory looks like it could be a competitor to Dreams Boutique.

  6. Was in Boulangerie yesterday and overheard the owner discussing some work to be done to the space with a GC. The work is to take place 3 consecutive Mondays while the bakery is normally closed. Not sure what the scope of the work is-but I am guessing it has something to do with either making the seating options better or somehow making the counter experience more efficient. Maybe a modification to the millwork (at the counter) to allow pre-packages bread or pastry options so folk can grab and buy?

  7. Heard some construction going on in the old Body Shop space today as I walked by. Wonder what is going in-please let it be something good. A L'Occitane would be dreamy!

    1. Interesting. Yea, I saw they had covered the windows up and thought something was going on there. I'm not surprised because it's a prime location. Hopefully it will be a really good new place. But my hopes have been dashed more often than not. (Please not another store selling cheap trinkets!) But we will see! :)

    2. I was looking at the work permits on there and it says it will be for the same use. So I guess that means it won't be serving any type of food or drink, I assume?

  10. Hi, I found Elementary schools in Forest Hills are over crowded and some kids in the zone were stolen their spots by kids form out side of the zone. We should support good education in Forest Hills and send our kids to the good zoned schools. Please go to this petition and sign! Also could you post this petition on your site to get more attention from people in FH?

  15. Eatery Row has posted a poll in an open letter to Danny Brown begging him to open a wine bar on or near Austin Street. I think this is a great idea. If you could share it with the readers here, maybe word will get back to him. The poll and the letter can be found here: http://eateryrowforesthills.blogspot.com/2012/05/open-letter-to-danny-brown.html

  19. Does anyone know what is going on at the lot on Austin Street between Bahn Thai and the Police Precinct, across the back side of Gerard Towers? It was that hardware supply store but was taken down years ago but seems like there is some activity going on...Does anyone know what they are building or whats planned?!

  24. Old Vienna Cafe on Queens Blvd is turning into an Irish bar/ restaurant in a few weeks. Same owners as lately. The "new owners" in the window.

  25. Rumor has it Buffalo Wild Wings will be coming to where Staples was on Continental.

  26. Oh and Red Mango will be coming to where OTB once was on Queens Blvd.

  27. Oh and I heard Chipotle is moving to 70-30 Austin Street (Martha's old location). That should be quite interesting to see. With how popular Chipotle seems to be, using Martha's space will be a tight fit no?

    1. Thanks for the tips We have been reporting Chipotle and Red Mango for months. But all is excused because you did bring us one bit of news about the Buffalo Wild Wings (if it indeed turns out to be more than a rumor.) I have a feeling you may have just discovered this blog. If so, welcome!

      Delete
    2. Oh, and Chipotle took over the Martha's space AND the former pizzeria space next to it, so your taco fears can now be put to rest. They will have more than enough space.

    3. Yup - i'm a newbie and am loving this blog. You'd think with living in Forest Hills my entire life and working on Austin Street for 10 years, i'd know all that is going on but i've found some unknown/awesome things on your blog and for this I thank you :)

(I hope Buffalo Wild Wings is not just a rumor - I have many of my friends ready and waiting for their shrimp and wings. Gonna be many angry Forest Hillsians with torches on my door step should it not be true lol)

  28. What do you think of nominating Forest Hills for neighborhood of the year at Curbed NY? You have all the reasons in your blog! (I am now hooked on La Boulangerie!)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. While I agree with you about La Boulangerie, one out-of-this-world French eatery and a Chipotle do not make a Neighborhood of the Year in my book. How about we give it another year and see if we get some cool new places filling up all those empty storefronts on Austin? We also have a historical landmark of a stadium standing there with barely any use at all. What a waste! A perfectly wonderful plan to put it to use for arts events and concerts was voted down this year by the West Side Tennis Club. A MAJOR step backwards for our neighborhood.

I like Forest Hills a lot, but I actually do not think it really merits any Neighborhood of the Year recognition—yet. Sorry, but aside from the newly opened Farmer's Market, Boulangerie, Bareburger and now Chipotle (which many other NYC neighborhoods already have), what else could we use to support our nomination? You tell me....

      Delete
    2. Absolutely agree with you. Forest hills is definitely not one of the "hot" neighborhoods - it's just not there yet. We are slowly headed in the right direction since I've lived here - about 2 years. The conversion of the stadium for artistic use would have been huge, alas! We need more innovative cuisine, a few great cocktail lounges and to get rid of some of the trashy stores on Austin. Also, entertainment. Park slope has live music somewhere almsot everynight. With some of the new luxury buildings going up I do think this neighborhood is going to get a facelift. I think in 5 years this place is going to be very different than it is right now.

    3. While I'm listing all the good things that have happened to Forest Hills in the past couple of years, i shouldn't leave out Emily's Sugar Rush: http://emilysugarrush.com/

Now that's the type of charming and unique shop Austin could use more of... How many other NYC neighborhoods can say they have a candy shop like Emily's? Not many.

    1. We left the city early yesterday after a late lunch and stopped at the Station House for a couple of beers on the way home. This place is fantastic and a great addition to The Austin-Conti Business District. The staff is great, the beer selection is exactly what this town needed. This is actually the fifth establishment the owners have created, so these guys know what they are doing and I am very confident this place will be around for the long run. With the recent addition of Mr. Vino's Specialty Foods, the soon to open Flying Pig; maybe this blighted neighborhood will get a 2nd chance at matching its past glory.

  38. Have also heard that Lucille Roberts is moving out of the 'hood. What would be great is to have Blink Fitness move into the area. (NY Sports is over-subscribed and doesn't care much about its membership.) Blink is clean, has the latest machines and is inexpensive (no contract).
